I also lock my doors, windows, and car and don't live in areas where there is any of this sort of activity. I simply don't have enough stuff or much of any stuff of any value to warrant insurance. In 10 years though I haven't had a need for it and neither has any of my friends with the exception of one incident that occurred in the dorms where a friends room was flooded by a burst overhead fire safety nozzle. Sure its around $10-15 according to my previous quotes from my insurance company. If he had stayed in the same apartment he'd have been fine for the most part.As for the comment about renters insurance - While I won't disagree that having something happen to your stuff isn't a setback I will disagree in the need for renters insurance. That would require paperwork and new keys and allow the new management company the opportunity to enforce the new rules. He had a key to his original apartment however the complex recently changed management and he moved from his original apartment in the complex to a new apartment in the same complex. This sounds silly to me but the new management may be trying to shave their own insurance costs by proving that the renters are carrying their own? As for the utilities, I can understand their want for you to provide them with proof of them being in your name though I've never seen a complex where the utilities didn't revert back to them automatically if not in someone else's name (which of course would tip them immediately to you not having them in your own name).Seriously, have your mail forwarded beginning tomorrow and get some sleep. Utilize this information to your own advantage.As for renters insurance, I've never had it nor have I been asked for it. At this point deduce a) the cost to move out and break the lease, b) the time left on the lease, and c) if they will try to evict you for failure to provide them with the requested information. Get a PO box rental and forward your mail to there for the time being. Tampering with the mail would be if the management company was removing it from your box without your express permission or if they went so far as to open it. You'll likely be more successful changing future practices this way than using some glorified public resource for rental or property disputes. I'd write the ethics chairmen of any of those private associations to clarify the conduct of management (I've done this before, when I got the "it's something we have to do by the xxx" line of crap). This usually isn't the actual post office you can see from the street, but there's probably one within 5 miles of you in a town like Seattle (mine is about 1 mile away).I'd call the power company and get your account number changed, there's no telling what those yahoos are going to do with it.Did your proof of renter's insurance include anything besides your name and address? Washington State should have a couple of private boards of which the management company is probably a renter (think along the lines of "Wash. Tell the post office to hold your mail at the distribution facility until you come get it.
